overview

The Urban Patchwork radically breaks with the rigid, segregated streetscapes of Vienna, transforming the Ziegelofengasse and Mittersteig intersection into a fluid, continuous haptic tapestry where the streetscape is completely reimagined. By pedestrianizing the transit lane and reclaiming the ground plane, the design dissolves conventional asphalt barriers into a playful, entirely barrier-free environment that connects previously isolated neighborhood fixtures like the local kindergarten and senior residency.

Instead of relying on static vertical boundaries or rigid functions, the streetscape becomes an undulating, free-flowing landscape that naturally guides movement through tactile material cues. Playful rubber granulate for the kindergarten zone, smooth natural stone that absorbs historical entrance steps for senior accessibility, and temporary textiles from local shops interlace to create a highly responsive, kinetic urban floor.

Crucially, the project rejects a fixed architectural outcome, shifting focus from permanent infrastructure to an adaptable “infrastructure of enablement”. Through a decentralized 50x50 cm modular plug-in framework distributed across neighborhood anchors and tracked via a localized digital app, the public realm becomes an ongoing performance of collective ownership. The result is a dynamic, ever-changing social choreography where multi-generational residents actively negotiate, play, and build their shared urban daily life together.
